Design Ideas For Your Living Room

When purchasing one of our homes in Chattanooga TN, you have the opportunity to work with our design expert to put the finishing touches and finishes on every room in your home. This means your home feels like an extension of you and your tastes, right from the start. Of course, you probably have living room furniture that you’re planning on moving into your new home, but there are ways to update and take elements of the new trends to give your living room new life in its new home.

Upcycling and turning to actual classics – not just mass-produced remakes of a period – combines a few of the trends these days. Classic living room furnishings are on point, but so is using existing pieces to improve and update to help the environment. If you have a sofa or some chairs that just need recovering and maybe some fresher padding, use those instead of buying brand new pieces. New fabrics can bring new life to an older piece of furniture. You’ll still probably want some new pieces, though, and even with any fabrics, try to look for sustainable items and eco-friendly materials. Look to stone, wood, and rattan for warmth and style, with fabrics and textures that complement the materials.

With rattan making a resurgence, it should come as no surprise that the ‘70s are also making a comeback. Along with the rattan, you’ll see more teak, textured fabrics, and peg-styled legs on furniture, not to mention some of the colors, including mustard and sage. However, this time they tend to be more accent pieces rather than the overwhelming color scheme. Pair these colors with smokey gray, or cream, or another more modern neutral and you can enjoy the essence of the ‘70s without quickly feeling outdated. You should probably avoid the multi-colored shag carpeting, but you can still buy woven rugs in natural fibers.

A lot of trends link together. Even if you don’t want a return to the ‘70s color palette, bright colors and prints are showing up in a range of colors so you can find what works for your living room. While you can reupholster or buy new furniture in a bright color and/or pattern, it may be better to keep larger pieces of furniture more neutral and classic – though curvier pieces are popular these days. You can use the bold colors and prints in accent walls, throw pillows, rugs, artwork, or even curtains. Most people prefer to keep a fairly minimalistic overall design and let the bolder pieces be the highlights. It’s also easier to update when you grow tired of a trend.

Finally, if you have a green thumb, start bringing more plants indoors. While some people prefer to go with an accent wall of a bold palm pattern wallpaper, others bring real palms indoors. Adding plants is particularly on trend if your room is fairly modern and minimalist otherwise. The plants soften the edges and make a room feel more comfortable while adding a touch of vibrancy. Consider a combination of taller potted plants with smaller tabletop groupings of other plants, such as succulents, or even add that ‘70s touch with a flowing spider plant hanging in a macrame holder.

Ultimately, go with what feels right to you. Your living room should be somewhere that lets the whole family sit back and relax and feel comfortable. You can easily pick one or two trends that complement each other to give your room an updated look, but always make sure it’s something you truly like. Still, it’s good to try new things in our homes in Chattanooga TN, and with our Design Studio’s help, we can make sure you’ll be happy with the final outcome.
